To bag or to mulch that is the lawn mowing question. Both have their benefits and draw backs and when used correctly using both of these techniques correctly can help you get a healthier, fuller looking lawn without having to break the bank on fancy fertilizers and grass seed. Knowing how to properly cut your lawn can give it that boost that you are looking for. Before you even make one pass in your lawn you have a decision to make. To mulch…or to bag.
First off what is the difference between the two? Bagging is pretty self explanatory, you put the bag on the mower and empty it after what seem like waaay to short of distance. Mulching in the simplest explanation is mowing without the bag. In more detail mulching cuts the clippings into fine pieces that fall easily to the soil surface. There they can be rapidly broken down by the soil witch releases nutrients back into the soil.
Now that you know the difference lets look at the benefits both mulching and bagging have.
Bagging
- Helps reduce the clipping buildup on the lawn
- Great for the first and last cuts of the year.
- Can help pick up leaves
- Useful when the grass is wet or longer
- More time between cuts as mulching should be done more frequently.
Mulching
- Great way to keep the lawn healthy by providing extra nutrients and putting natural fertilizer back into the soil
- Reduces waste at landfills and collections sites.
- Helps the soil retain water during hotter times by keeping the ground cool.
- It is one of the easiest ways to keep a great looking lawn without having to spend time and money on chemicals and fertilizers.
As you can see both bagging and mulching have their place in the lawn care world. Now that you know the differences and benefits of both you can make the right decision for your lawn to get a healthier, greener, fuller looking lawn for you and your family to enjoy.
